Discover Lisbon’s Scenic Cycling Routes in Celebration of La Vuelta a España

In August, La Vuelta a España, one of cycling’s prestigious Grand Tours, will begin in Lisbon for the first time since 1997. To commemorate this, Visit Lisbon has curated five picturesque cycling routes for tourists to explore the region.

Cais do Sodré to Belém

One of Lisbon’s most popular routes, this five-mile stretch along the Tagus River starts at Cais do Sodré, known for its Time Out food market. Cyclists will follow a flat, easy trail passing landmarks like the 25 de Abril suspension bridge. As the route winds into Belém, riders can admire the historic Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument of the Discoveries.

Restauradores to Monsanto Forest

Beginning at Restauradores Square in central Lisbon, this route travels up Avenida da Liberdade to Eduardo VII Park. Known for its manicured hedges and mosaic walkways, the park leads to a green corridor through Campolide and ends at Monsanto Forest Park, featuring 26 miles of woodland pathways.

Campo Grande to Parque das Nações

Connecting two major parks, this five-mile urban route starts at Campo Grande, home to a boating lake and the Museum of Lisbon. Cyclists will journey through peaceful residential areas and finish at Parque das Nações, a redeveloped riverfront area with attractions like the Oceanário de Lisboa, the Knowledge Pavilion, and a scenic cable car.

Cascais to Guincho Beach

A short train ride from Lisbon takes you to Cascais, where this route follows a clifftop cycle path to Guincho Beach. Highlights include Hell’s Mouth sea arch, the Casa da Guia, Farol da Guia lighthouse, and views of Pena Palace from the Serra de Sintra National Park. The route ends at Guincho Beach, ideal for surfing and kiteboarding.

Belém to Costa da Caparica

Starting at Belém River Terminal, this route includes a ferry ride to Trafaria, a charming fishing village. From there, cyclists can enjoy a path to Costa da Caparica’s beaches, offering over 15km of sands, local markets, and a bustling promenade.
