Abu Dhabi to Host International Jazz Day 2025: Celebrating Cultural Harmony and Musical Innovation

Every year on April 30th, International Jazz Day celebrates the sound of artistic freedom worldwide. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock have announced Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as the Global Host for the 2025 edition of International Jazz Day.

“International Jazz Day heads to Abu Dhabi in 2025, infusing new energy and basking in the blend of cultures. The celebration in this cosmopolitan city will embody the power of jazz to unite and delight in our shared humanity,” said Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO.

“Jazz is a language of unity and a beacon of hope that continues to inspire new generations of artists from all corners of the globe. In Abu Dhabi, a renowned group of international artists will join us to share their musical vision, build bridges through the power of music, and create harmony in our diverse world,” added Herbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

Partnering with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the event will highlight the city’s cultural heritage, blending Arab and Emirati traditions with jazz. Classical instruments like the Oud, Qanoon, and Ney will introduce global audiences to ‘Arabic Jazz’. As the UNESCO Creative City of Music, Abu Dhabi will showcase its rich musical traditions alongside jazz.

“We are honored that Abu Dhabi has been selected as the Global Host for the 2025 edition of International Jazz Day. This recognition underscores our city’s thriving music scene and unwavering commitment to cultural diversity and artistic excellence,” said HE Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi. “Hosting International Jazz Day reaffirms our dedication to the arts and provides a global stage to showcase our dynamic music scene.”

Abu Dhabi’s commitment to the cultural sector has made it a global hub for arts and creativity. The city attracts world-class cultural institutions while nurturing its local Arabic roots.

The event will also feature educational programs and community outreach. On April 30, Abu Dhabi will bring music education to local schools, and institutions like Berklee Abu Dhabi and New York University Abu Dhabi will offer workshops and masterclasses. Special focus will be on young musicians, encouraging them to pursue careers in jazz.

Established by UNESCO in 2011 and recognized by the United Nations, International Jazz Day unites countries and communities every April 30th. The day celebrates jazz’s ability to unite people and promote dialogue, freedom of expression, and respect for human rights and diversity. The Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz leads the organization of this global event, reaching over 2 billion people through education, performances, and community outreach.
